Northumbria Organic Producer was established as a group in 2000. The aim was to bring together organic farmers and growers, processors, wholesalers and retailers within the North East, to share information and experiences, hoping to encourage cooperation along the supply chain and improve market opportunities.
The group also wanted to share their understanding of organic food with a wider audience and provide opportunities for you, the consumers, to appreciate wholesome produce from this region.
The group encompasses a range of production systems and all members believe in organic methods, and the benefits these offer. They are regulated by one of a number of UK Certification bodies such as the Soil Association or Organic Farmers and Growers, who oversee adherence to strict standards and carry out annual inspection on all certified premises.
Organic production is about producing healthy food in a sustainable way from a well balanced living soil.
Organic food:
- Is healthy- on average organic food contains higher levels of vitamin C, essential minerals and cancer fighting antioxidants
- Avoids pesticides - There are severe restrictions on use of artificial chemicals- the well balanced soil and healthy crops are maintain by rotations, natural predators and sustainable weed control (links) There is also a veto on routine use of drugs for livestock (which can be overused in intensive farming)- diseases are controlled by more natural methods of husbandry.
- Cares for animals –welfare is paramount under organic farming and the benefits are recognised by animal welfare organisations and the UK government
- Is good for wildlife and the environment – lower pollution from sprays and less harmful wastes, along lower energy use make organic farming better for the local and wider environment.
